Ideally replace after every one or two years, simply remove stailess steel cathode by 'pulling off' and unscrew the anode to replace. Note always clean the stainless steel part thoroughly (you can leave in a kettle descaler compound to clean)

This allows you to remove the copper anode when not in use, normally in winter. Also saves wear on the copper anode. Simple to fit just screw in place of the anode.
